The massive success of Volkswagen’s Golf series convinced the German giants to release a new 2012 R model. This one is also a 3 or 5 door hatchback with 5 passenger seats, and it should powered by a 4 cylinder engine capable of producing 256 horsepower!

The new engine, a turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 2.0-litre 16-valve inline-4 engine with direct fuel injection delivers 256 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 243 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm. The engine powers an all-wheel drive system via a 6-speed manual transmission (with no option for an automatic one, sadly- Although it might be introduced in the future).

Acceleration is rated to 5.6 seconds to 60, which is pretty good, considering the BMW 535i gets it done in 5.7 seconds and costs on average 33 per cent more (Unless you buy a used car which has been used and abused with many owners). The top speed is set at 130 mph. The fuel economy will be of around 19 mpg in the city, and 27 mpg on the highway, which is not bad for the 3450 lb hatchback.

There will be 5 passenger seats available, arranged in a 2+3 system (as are all the Golfs, in our opinion all cars should follow suite!), so no change there. The exterior design is pretty much unchanged from previous models. Minor changes can be seen on the fascia and on the rear side.

New Audi A3

The spy pictures we have found on the net show an aggressive front bumper design, which could be a sign of the S line package.

The new A3 will be built on the new Volkswagen Group MQB platform, which will also form the basis for the next VW Golf.

Thanks to the new platform’s technology and packaging advantages, the new A3 will be lighter, safer.

We have been told it will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

A slight increase in prices is expected, starting at around £15,500.

Lightly camouflaged, the model has a front fascia that mimics the facelifted A4 and A5.

We can also see a sculpted hood, a tailgate-mounted spoiler and LED taillights (Thats if it stays on the model)

Inside, the cabin we have been told will feature higher qulaitymaterials and an improved design.

Notable highlights include circular air vents, aluminum trim and an updated MMI system with a seven-inch display and a larger control knob that incorporates a touchpad for handwriting recognition.

The Top Driving Apps of 2011

As smartphones soar in popularity, so do apps, with thousands of new applications flooding the market every year.

Because of this, we at Inde-Tech have found the top 5 driving apps for you to make your car journey or your daily commute that little bit easier or more enjoyable.

AA Parking

Price: £1.99

Ever driven round a town or city for ages looking for a parking space? The AA Parking app uses your smartphone’s GPS signal to find the closest parking locations to you, as well as everything you need to know about a town or city’s car parks. Including whether it’s free parking or pay and display, directions and even the maximum height of the car park – AA Parking is a must-have app if you travel a lot for business or for pleasure.

Parking Aid

Price: £0.69

Another parking-related app, Parking Aid uses GPS to find your car if you’ve parked it in a car park or a middle of a field and can’t remember where you’ve left it. The app stores your location and then leads you right back to it – a great app if, like me, you’re not great with directions and can’t trace your steps back to the car park.

Witness Driving

Price: £0.69

For the drivers who want to watch their prowess on the road, the Witness Driving app is a black box-style video recorder that records your journey viewed through the windscreen for up to an hour. The app can be used to record the evidence in the event of an accident, or even as a track-day memento, as it records speed and has the ability to take photos.

RAC Traffic

Price: Free

No one likes sitting in a traffic jam for hours on end, especially on your daily commute. The RAC Traffic app flags up any traffic problems on Google Maps depending on severity (yellow, orange and red), so you can avoid the motorway or dual carridgeways if traffic is at a standstill.

DriveGain

Price: Free

Want to save money on fuel by cutting your fuel consumption? DriveGain measures your fuel economy by looking at your speed and distance covered. Giving you a journey score from 1-100, it allows you to judge how efficiently you are driving, as the higher the score, the better and the higher your MPG.

Petrolprices Pro

Price: £2.99

With petrol prices at a record high, saving money on fuel is paramount, especially if you use your car for long journeys. Petrolprices Pro scans data from 11,000 petrol stations in the UK, letting you know the closest and the cheapest petrol station to you, allowing you to save money on petrol. Even if it’s a couple of pence a litre you can save on petrol, this app is definitely worth it.

Winter Driving tips

It’s getting cold outside. December has arrived and with it the first signs of frost and the threat of ice and snow. We’ve all started to wrap up warm, layers, scarves and gloves donned before leaving the house, even short journeys become heavily padded marches of defiance against the bitter temperature of the outside world. Just as we protect our bodies and homes from cold weather, so we should our cars. Preparation and careful driving are a must when travelling anywhere this winter.

  • Take your car to a mechanic and check out the following: battery, antifreeze level, thermostat, heater, brakes, and defroster.
  • Check to make sure your tires have adequate tread. If the treads are worn, replace them. In the last couple of years there has been heavy snow fall in the UK, why not invest in some Snow chains, check that they fit your tyres first.
  • Make a visual inspection of your vehicle’s lights. Make sure the front and rear lights are operational, especially the car’s flashing hazard lights.
  • Often in the winter, the windshield wiper fluid may freeze. Instead of toughing it out until spring, exchange the fluid with one made especially to spray in freezing conditions.
  • Similarly, consider purchasing winter wiper blades to cut through snow and ice instead of using regular ones throughout the year.
  • Check the spray nozzles of your windshield-washer system. Sometimes, they get blocked by wax or debris. Use a needle or pin to clear blocked nozzles.
  • Make sure you have a scraper in your glove compartment, it’s often more effective than de-icer.

Here are some Driving tips for driving in snow and ice. If it gets really bad we would recommend not travelling at all unless absolutely necessary.

  • Before you go, listen to the local travel news for information regarding accidents or closed roads.
  • Plan your route ahead of time to avoid any roads that become dangerous during bad weather. If a road is closed or blocked, do not attempt to continue on this route.
  • Test your brakes gently as you set off, this will give you an idea of how slippery the roads are if there is black ice.
  • Use gentle impulses while driving: accelerate gently, turn slowly, and brake carefully and early. Avoid unexpected quick movements that could cause you to skid by leaving ample room between you and the next car. Anticipate turns, stops, and lane changes well before they occur.
  • If you have a vehicle with four or all wheel drive, don’t get overconfident and rely on its abilities to get you out of a problem. The traction and force created by all four wheels driving instead of two helps you get going from a stop, but does not assist your vehicle’s braking ability. In fact, AWD- and 4WD-equipped vehicles are heavier than 2WD vehicles and require more time and braking power to come to a stop.
  • See and be seen. Always keep your lights on while driving through rain, snow, and fog.
